This image is part of a series of paintings I'm doing which I started with CGTalk's "Journey" Challenge. I more or less used the Challenge as a catalyst to generate imagery for personal work based loosely around the idea of death as a journey. Themes and influences which have been percolating for ages in my imagination have been Odd Nerdrum, Dave McKean, and also various modern draughtsmen. This is part of a series which includes 14 paintings / collages. The painting is in PS, with textures overlaid that I took myself from a historical prison museum in Philadelphia.

It's a Master Copy of Jean-Léon Gérôme's (1824-1904) painting Black Bashi-Bazouk. OFDW 017 has been particularly amazing, with lots of great pieces coming out of it ~ it's been incredible to see the diversity of talent, and the efforts which the participants have been putting in. I am priviliged to host such an exciting Workshop!
